Chapman Pro Bono Counsel Sara Ghadiri spoke at an event hosted by the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC): “Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) Extension in Illinois: A Celebration and Pro Bono Training.” The event celebrated a new law, signed by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker on August 6, 2021, that extends the age of protection from 18 to 21 years old for immigrants eligible for SIJS in Illinois. The extension provides protection to eligible immigrant children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected by one or both parents and are at risk of deportation. Sara—who was recognized as the NIJC’s Human Rights Award honoree in June 2021—participated in a panel discussion for pro bono attorneys.
